What is Employee Assistance Program (EAP)?

An EAP is an agreement between an employer and a counselling agency to supply confidential counselling to an employee or employee's family member. The counselling assists the employee in addressing personal or family issues that might otherwise interfere with their well-being at home, in the workplace or in the community.

Employers are increasingly recognizing the value of offering an EAP to their employees.

Employers Benefits of an EAP Include...

  1. Invest in a Stable Satisfied Workforce
    • less staff turnover
    • higher commitment to the organization
    • less time spent on disciplinary and grievance procedures

  1. Increase Productivity/Reduce Accidents

Personal problems can overlap into the workplace and impair job performance. Inability to focus on work puts an employee at risk for...

    • workplace accidents
    • inappropriate decision-making
    • lowered quantity and quality of work produced
    • damaging the public image of the organization
    • missed deadlines
    • frequent mistakes

  1. Decrease Absenteeism

Employees experiencing personal difficulties are more likely to demonstrate ...

    • increased sick time
    • leave of absences
    • tardiness
    • multiple excuses for missed work

  1. Stress Reduction

Intervention that assists the employee to address personal problems will benefit the employee by helping them manage the symptoms of stress and anxiety in a way that allows them to concentrate on their job.

  1. Decrease Interpersonal Conflict

Personal issues that are not dealt with can result in strained workplace relationships. Managers and supervisors spend less time dealing with the interpersonal conflicts by encouraging employees to seek professional assistance.

  1. Represents a Holistic, Compassionate Approach to Employer/ Employee Relations

An EAP is tangible way for an employer to convey a sense of care and concern for the well- being of their employees.
